On their second album following their hiatus, The Early November have cranked out ten new songs. The band is off to a good start with opening track “Narrow Mouth” and “Better This Way”, both of which come with some mighty fine choruses and pack plenty of punch.

As you work your way down the tracklisting though, things become less noteworthy. The hooks simply aren’t as memorable and the melodies not quite as strong. It’s all a bit too predictable and harmless and as a result the songs float by without leaving much of a lasting impression. Basically, “Imbue” sounds like the musical equivalent of starting your computer in safe mode. These guys obviously know how to write a solid song, which makes me wonder why they didn’t write more of them!

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
