My Iron Lung is a relatively new post-hardcore band out of California who just dropped “Relief”, which is out now on Pure Noise. Right from the start it becomes obvious that they’ve been listening quite a lot to other bands in the genre, checking all the required boxes as they go. From the angsty, cathartic screams to the kind of riffs that go from jarring to atmospheric in a matter of seconds… it’s all present and accounted for.

Unfortunately they lack that something special that could make them stand out in what is already a pretty crowded scene. And in case you’re not planning on necessarily doing things differently, then you’d damn well make sure you’re better at what you’re doing than the other bands. While My Iron Lung is off to a decent enough start with “Commonwealth”, there are unfortunately also songs like “Hard Season” with some fairly awkward vocals to take into account and it’s songs like that which make me think these guys are not quite there yet. Maybe next time?

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
