Most bands throw everything they have at you right from the first song. Not so with UK’s Above Them, who kick off “Water Lane” with the shortest and most mellow song on their new album, “Theories Of Planned Behaviour”. And just when you think ‘well, this is kinda relaxing’, they let it all rip in the next song. Bastards!

Gruff, melodic punk rock is the name of their game and they play it well. Especially on tunes like “Cutting Loose” and “Too Little, Too Late”, Above Them make it clear they know how to write catchy hooks, while other songs on here linger somewhere between 90ies pop-punk and the Get Up Kids, the latter in no small part due to Oli Wood’s vocal delivery.

If you’re into catchy punk rock, there’s honestly no reason why you shouldn’t give “Water Lane” a spin. It won’t change your life, but at the very least it will brighten up your day.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
