On their sophomore album, ‘Bambi,’ Connecticut’s Anxious managed to hold onto what made people take notice of 2022’s ‘Little Green House’ while at the same time expanding their sound. It’s pop-punk, it’s early 00’s emo and it’s everything in between as well. You’ll hear a bit of Brand New, some Taking Back Sunday, topped off with Jimmy Eat  World vibes. Lyrically, the record is a look behind the scenes of one’s post-adolescent years, including the accompanying breakups and burnouts.

One thing that’s for sure is that‘Bambi’ is an album that offers plenty of variety. And while some of it lands, there are also tracks that are just there. Hovering around without doing much else. For every ‘Never Said,’ the urgent album opener, there’s also an ‘Audrey Go Again,’ a song so sugary it made me book a dentist’s appointment.

I'm curious to see what direction Anxious will take next, as there’s certainly potential for something fresh and exciting. However, at this point in time, it feels like they're treading familiar ground, revisiting ideas that were already flogged to death in the early 00’s.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
