Like most other bands, San Diego’s Beach Goons started when Pablo Cervantez, the band’s guitarist, vocalist and sole constant member, and some of his friends decided it would be fun to begin a band. Eventually a line-up solidified with the addition of drummer Chris Moran and bassist David Orozco.

Originally intended to be an EP, ‘hoodratscumbags’ comes with ten songs that are holed up somewhere between punk, surf and… well, surf punk. As a result, nothing on this album will sound too alien to fans of Wavves and FIDLAR. You are more into the stylings of say, Joyce Manor or Culture Abuse? Don’t fret, there’s plenty for you to enjoy as well. Cuts like ‘A.M.’ and ‘’ are basically fuzzed up pop songs while they aren’t afraid to let their Mexican roots shine through in the Spanish-sung ‘Chunti’.

Nothing on ‘hoodratscumbags’ will turn your world upside down. But like their band name, this album is a lot of fun.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
