Album Reviews
The Coathangers start off their fourth album with “Follow Me”, a sweet burst of primitive punk. If you haven’t seen the video yet, make sure you do because it features fellow Atlanta rockers Mastodon in drag. Not something you see every day. “Follow Me” is followed by the equally charged surf-rock song “Shut Up” and by the time “Springfield Cannonball” comes around, you’ve got the sound of these three girls figured out… drums that are relentless, guitars that jab and a bass that thumps from start to finish. Oh, and all of it is undeniably catchy. Not bad for a band that started out on a jokey whim…
Even when they tone it down on a track like “Zombie”, they still manage to sound raw but in a more contemplative way. And closer “Drive” shows The Coathangers can sound fun and downright poppy just as well. Whatever way these girls choose to go, the result is loud, pretty damn awesome and just a blast to listen to.
