I was a bit late to the party that is The Corps, having found out about them through 2022’s ‘From Oblivion’ EP. The musicianship on that one was amazing, recalling the heydays of the Epi/Fat era. Fast forward three years and these Canadians return with their second full-length, ‘Fractured Protocol’.

Apparently, their name is a reference to the Green Lantern Corps, the fictional intergalactic law enforcement agency and superhero team appearing in comics published by DC Comics, and their lyrics are peppered with references. Which I didn’t spot seeing as I don’t know the first thing about the comic. But the lyrics work on a personal level with the general theme being one of frustration that comes with life throwing a stick in the spokes in spite of you doing everything correctly as you work towards achieving your goals and dreams. In other words, relatable.

These frustrations are captured in lightning-fast skatepunk/punkrock tunes that are reminiscent of older NOFX, No Use For A Name and Lagwagon with powerful drums and some serious shredding that still leave plenty of room for vocalist Dan Garrison to take things to an even higher level.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
