Album Reviews
Today marks the day that Nashville indie grunge trio Daddy Issues release their debut album, “Deep Dream” via Infinity Cat.
Throughout ten songs, guitarist/vocalist Jenna Moynihan calls herself a lot of different things (not great, sour, unimportant,…) while also addressing sexual assault and abuse in the powerful “I’m Not”. If that sounds like a downer, well... it’s not. Kudos to her for being so brash and open. By facing these themes head-on, she comes out the other end more powerful.
Unfortunately the grunge-y, fuzzed up tunes aren’t equally powerful, sounding more like a meeker version of L7 instead with candy-sweet hooks. On top of that, it becomes harder with every passing song to tell these tracks apart. Except for “Dog Years”, where the opening notes always make me think of Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box”.
