Having never heard of Gengahr before, I initially thought I was going into a black metal album. Yeah, I know. Picture my surprise when I heard the title track that opens “She’s A Witch” with a slick, danceable riff and fluttering falsetto vocals that are as melancholic as they are catchy. It’s a pop song but a slightly offbeat one. The same can be said about “Haunter”, equally poppy but even more gentle with some parts reminding me of Air. “Powder” is up next and finds a home somewhere between Unknown Mortal Orchestra and MGMT before “Bathed In Light” rounds up this EP with a haunting vibe running through the entire song.

So no, Gengahr is not a Norwegian black metal band. They are from North London and play delicate psych-pop tunes that I would like to hear more of! Luckily I won’t have to wait long seeing as a full-length is scheduled for May.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
