Album Reviews
Godbrother is a relatively new band operating out of Brooklyn. They recently released their debut 5-song EP, “Undertow”, and describe their sound as ‘old man pop punk’.
Opening track “Tuesday Night: Fox’s Lounge” gets things going right away with a nice riff and gang vocals and then keeps on plowing on right up until the end. The title track is up next and while it’s off to a similarly promising start, it unfortunately runs out of steam about halfway through. Luckily, “Kick Rocks” is up next and comes with something of a Samiam vibe that I can get behind. The remaining tracks carry on in the same tradition and come peppered with plenty of whoa’s throughout.
Godbrother have a lot going for them, but I’m not sure it’s all coming together on “Undertow”. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but even though I like what they’re going for, in the end the songs don’t stick as much as you’d like them to. It’s a good place to start though, and if they tighten a few bolts here and there, I’m already looking forward to see what they’ll come up with next.
