Album Reviews
Normally I associate ‘gurr’ with death metal bands. I’m sure those bands have a lot of sensible things to say about stuff like the best way to eviscerate someone, but all I hear is Gurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
However, the Gurr that released “In My Head” is a German twosome who met during their freshmen year in an American Studies class at university in Berlin. I still don’t understand everything they sing about, because songs “Walnuss” and “Klartraum” are in German, but I’m definitely liking this a helluva lot more than say, Corpse Grinder or Extremely Rotten Flesh.
That’s because these young ladies seem to be equally influenced by the likes of Best Coast, The Raincoats and Bratmobile and know how to write songs that are as catchy as they are punchy. They themselves describe their music as first wave gurrrlcore and whether you’re listening to the completely badass opening combo that is “Breathless” and "#1985", the sun-drenched “Moby Dick” or the surfy “Computer Love”, that description actually makes a lot of sense.
