Album Reviews
For 25 years, the kilted Canadians known as The Real McKenzies have been playing their brand of bagpipes-enhanced punk rock all over the world. To celebrate two and a half decades of hanging in there, the band has now released a new album called “Two Devils Will Talk”.
Their new album is one without surprises, but does come with fourteen tunes that – like a finely distilled whiskey – go down smoothly with just a bit of a burning sensation. As on their past releases, they combine classic punk rock with Celtic influences and plenty of singalong parts and there is no denying that songs like “Float” and “Sail Again” are perfectly fine punk rock songs.
It is not a coincidence that I mention those two songs, because they are two of the few on this album that are entirely bagpipe-free. The instrument has always played an important part in The Real McKenzies’ sound and is the main reason why I am not a bigger fan. These guys know how to write a solid song, but… bagpipes!
