Album Reviews
Sudden Suspension is a pop-punk band from the school of The Wonder Years, but as can be heard on their new EP “There’s A Bigger Picture Here” they are not quite up to par with their teachers just yet.
The EP opens with a short one minute intro, before exploding into “As Good As It Gets” and “Eventually”, two songs where the band isn’t doing anything wrong. It’s pretty standard by the numbers pop-punk without any surprises, but it’s well executed with build-ups in the right places and some solid sing-along moments. One thing that does become clear pretty quick though is how bad the lyrics are. I mean, lines like ‘adolescence had me buckled at the knees’ and ‘I’m sorry I never figured out how to not be so fucking sad’… Really?
The guys in Sudden Suspension obviously know how to write a catchy pop-punk song that comes with plenty of punch, but they need some serious work in the lyrics department. And maybe rethink acoustic songs because “We’ll Always Have Each Other” just about made me throw up in my mouth a little bit. There’s definitely something there, but for now I’m not seeing the bigger picture.
