Album Reviews
If fuzzed out guitars get you going in the morning, then Summer Cannibals have a treat for you in the form of “Show Us Your Mind”, the band’s second album. Next to those fuzzed out riffs, the songs on here come armed with melodic hooks and plenty of energy to boot. It’s garage-y, punky and poppy all at once and with vocalist Jessica Boudreaux , they have a frontwoman that can go from snarling to soothing in under two seconds. It might explain how this Portland-based band got to open for both the Black Lips and CHVRCHES in the same week.
Whether the band is showing off their poppiest side (“That Feeling”), going for a darker vibe (“Afraid To Feel”) or just out to kick your ass (“Make You Better”), there are always plenty of oohs and aahs to go round while Summer Cannibals make you rock out in the fiercest way possible. They do lose a little steam towards the end when it becomes harder to tell some of the songs apart, but overall “Show Us Your Mind” made me want to show mine.
