Anytime people like Josh Homme, Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones get together to start a new band, expectations are going to run high, very high. That’s kinda like Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Harrison Ford getting together for a new Indiane Jones movie…. Oh wait, they already did that not too long ago. And just like “Indiana Jones & The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull”, Them Crooked Vultures’ debut was almost bound to disappoint. After all there are only so many expectations one band can exceed.

Queens Of The Stone Age, Foo Fighters, Nirvana and of course, Led Zeppelin… all of them have rightfully earned their spot in the list of best rock bands ever but somehow they don’t make magic happen on this one. Some of the songs on here simply sound a little too much like leftovers from a QOTSA album. Yes, “Caligula” and “Interlude With Ludes” and “Warsaw Or The First Breath You Take After You Give Up”, I’m looking at you.

But when they get on a roll, there’s no stopping them. Just have a listen to “New Fang”, “Dead End Friends” and “Scumbag Blues”. It shows that the magic is definitely there, it just hasn’t been pulled out of the hat yet. Maybe next time around things will sound as good on the album as they do on paper? I sure hope so.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
