On their ninth album overall and first one for Pirates Press, UK’s Wonk Unit do a lot of different things. And while a lot of them start off as good ideas, some of them falter and stumble along the way.

‘Good Good Glad To Hear It’ comes with twelve songs that are all over the place. There’s straight-forward punkrock tunes (‘Rapidly Declining Dignity’, ‘The Thickest Skin’) that sound like Snuff teaming up with Swingin’ Utters. Other songs however are more experimental like the gently shuffling country of  ‘Shiny Horses’, the Madness at half speed vibes of ‘Complicated Girl’ or the thrashy ‘Luxury Flats,’ which feels oddly out of place on the album. Which is saying something when you consider the fact that every other song on here sounds different from the one before or after it.

While there is a lot to be said for bands that venture out of their comfort zone, ‘Good Good Glad To Hear It’ is a bit too uneven for me with a lot of promising ideas that fall short in the end.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
