It's not every day that you get to post about hardcore bands from Suriname. That's because apparently there's only two of them in that part of the Caribbean and they teamed up for a split EP. Luguber and Anti-Everything (from Trinidad and Tobago) released the split EP late last year on Boatshrimp Records and Beerput Records. You can check it out below.
Luguber was formed in a town called Nickerie when drummer Akeem Smith and guitarist/vocalist Shavero Ferrier found out they had similar tastes in music. After a year of jamming in the basement, they recorded their first EP back in 2021 and rounded out the band's line-up with Norman Padma on bass.
Formed in 2000 in St. Joseph, Trinidad and Tobago, Anti-Everything were all still teenagers at the time and the band name was chosen to emphasize their uncompromising attitude of speaking up against authority. They got inspiration from the DIY ethos of hardcore punk and instilled it with elements of dub, ska, reggae, calypso and other genres in a quest for a shared post-colonial identity.
