Album Reviews

My interest in AFI has been waning since around the time Davey and Jade started competing about who could get the worst haircut. Not that one has to do with the other. But I am pretty sure I didn’t pay their last three albums combined anywhere near as much attention as ‘The Art Of Drowning’ or ‘Sing The Sorrow’. So what to make of ‘The Missing Man,’ the band’s new 5-song EP?
Well, opener ‘Trash Bat’ is a short and energetic blast that’s heavy on the harmonics in the chorus, while ‘Break Angels’ is moodier and comes with a strong bridge. So far, so good. ‘Back Into The Sun’ is a weird one though… doesn’t really do much of anything to be honest. And while ‘Get Dark’ is a bit snappier, it is derivative at best. And then the band gets all reflective and deep on the title track, but ends up trampling in place. Guess I’ll just stick with ‘Sing The Sorrow’ as my go to AFI release.
