We are very excited to premiere ‘VFTA,’ the latest song off Vacation’s upcoming full-length ‘Existential Risks and Returns,’ out Aug 6 on Salinas Records (pre-order). No idea who came up with the term grit-pop, but it describes ‘VFTA’ perfectly. Thick bass line, propulsive drums and buzzing guitars combined with solid melodies and a lo-fi attitude make for one hell of a song. Think Jay Reatard, Japandroids with a sprinkle of Guided By Voices and you are right in the ballpark.

‘Existential Risks and Returns’ marks the Cincinnati, OH based band’s first new album in three years and marks a shift from their last few LPs which saw the band ‘indulging some of their heavier Guided By Voices tendencies’.

For the new album, singer/guitarist Jerri Queen came to the band with a batch of complete songs, bringing them to practice for the rest of the band to add their individual flourishes. The result is a more straight-ahead collection of full-band, grit-pop songs that recalls their 2015 LP Non-Person. 

About the album:

“Existential Risks and Returns was written from the viewpoint of an approaching fork in the road, the internal conflicts that arise along the way and recognizing there is privilege in choice. Lyrically it is an exploration of the macro and micro worlds that we occupy and the learning process that is harnessing both; noting the potential for error in the realization that the personal universe and the cosmic universe are one in the same.“
