Mexican Slang is not just ‘¿Qué pedo?‘ or ‘¡Me vale madres!’, it is also a Canadian three-piece who have just released a wickedly delicious 3-song EP called “Inside The Velvet Castle”. As soon as the opening riff of “Blisters” kicks in, this band had won me over. With plenty of fuzzed up guitars and vocalist Annabelle Lee going from sounding all dreamy to demon-exorcising screams in seconds, this is the kind of band that will drag you in with just one song. And that’s before you’ve even heard “Pink Fog”, which by the way is badass as well because beneath its murkiness, this is actually a pop song at heart.
“L’Appel Du Vide” and “Halcyon” are up next and spiral around as lazily as cigarette smoke before it dissipates into thin air. It basically sounds like The Raveonettes’ creepy goth cousin. Poppy, psychedelic and punky… it sounds like a weird combo but Mexican Slang manage to make it sound easy. ¡A huevo!
