Album Reviews
- by Nate Hennon
In the past, I have found it difficult to enjoy bands that create their whole album in the studio. I was never able to wrap my head around how they reproduce their music in the live setting. I would not give them much credence because these groups would need to recruit studio musicians to play those instruments beyond the two-man band member’s capabilities in a live setting. This perspective changed when my wife took me to a Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. show in San Francisco a few years ago. That’s when I realized, ‘Who Cares? They’re great!”
Similar to my Jr Jr. show experience; I had no convinced notions while listening to the latest album, “Helter Seltzer”, from We Are Scientists.
Having this frame of mind allowed me to enjoy this album a lot. We Are Scientists created an album built for the iPod generation. No matter which song comes up on shuffle, this New York-based band’s signature synth-pop sound are upfront and present. If you like a moody pop epic, then check out “Buckle”, “In My Head” and “Waiting For You”. But if you are about to shoot an 80’s montage segment in your student film, then you are better suited listening to “Too Late” and “Classic Love”.
