Movie Reviews
An all-female remake of Ghostbusters? Fans of the original were outraged beyond belief when they first heard about it. I was more worried about the fact that director Paul Feig was going to helm this thing. He is after all, responsible for atrocities like Bridesmaids and The Heat. Turns out we were all right about this being a terrible idea.
No need to get into the plot here. We have all seen the 1984 original. And if you haven’t, you should. Plus there are few movies out there who so aptly manage to explain the entire plot in the title. This movie is about people who bust ghosts.
The 1984 original, starring Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray (who both have a cameo here), was a fun movie that I enjoyed the hell out of as a kid. This one… well, not so much. There are plenty of jokes being offered, but only a few of them actually land. There is some chemistry between Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig and Leslie Jones, but not nearly enough to make the drawn out conversations entertaining. And Kate McKinnon… well, she overacts in this weird, intense way that is incredibly annoying to watch. Also, why do these characters constantly start dancing?
The characters aren’t the only problem though. A lot of money seems to be spent on special effects that ended up looking like they were created with some free video editing app. The action sequences aren’t particularly exciting and because you already know the story, there are no surprises.
I’m still not sure why anybody thought a Ghostbusters remake was a good idea. Sure, it’s not the first crappy remake and it probably won’t be the last. But it’s definitely one of the worst I’ve seen so far and will probably only be enjoyed by the kind of people that like the updated Ghostbusters theme song.
