Album Reviews
- by Nate Hennon
It is hard not to automatically hear Greg Graffin's iconic vocal tone without expecting the rest of Bad Religion backing him up. Instead of having the BR team behind him, for Greg's third solo album, "Millport," he accompanied by the dudes from Social Distortion (sans Mike Ness). As you can imagine this sonic change lends itself very well to the folksy, Americana-ness created on this album. Becuase I have only recently begun to wrap my head around traditional Americana music, I cannot say if 'the banjo is doing a good job or not' in any particular song, but I know what sounds good. Judging from the music alone, "Millport" is a pleasant sounding album (good job Johnny 2 Bags, et al.).
As for the lyrical content, Graffin is a master at painting a picture of a world 'gone bad.' Any of the songs on "Millport" could easily fit on a BR album, or a Presidential Speech (oh, political). But, Graffin's vocal charm and lyrical 'headiness.' seems more hopeful than the latter. And slide guitar helps, it really does.
