St. Louis, MO's Modern Angst has a compelling story that reflects both personal and societal struggles. Formed in 2021 by Jared White, the band’s roots are deeply entwined with his need to process and express the tumultuous emotions brought on by the COVID pandemic and the broader social issues of modern America. The pandemic, with its spotlight on social and economic inequalities, served as a catalyst for Jared’s creative process, making music an essential outlet for his feelings of resentment and fear.
The band’s lineup is an intriguing mix of musical influences and backgrounds, each member bringing their unique flavor to the collective sound. Jared’s punk background, shaped by a decade of touring with his former band and influences like The Clash and Bad Religion, contrasts with David’s experience in hardcore and reggae from his time in St. Louis. Nick's contributions are colored by his involvement in both punk and jam bands, while Brandon’s metal and punk influences add an edge to the mix. This diverse blend of styles creates a distinctive sound that merges punk, hardcore, and ska.
Modern Angst’s debut EP, "Trampled," released in January 2022, set the stage for their evolving sound. Their upcoming full-length album, "Part X," is set to drop on September 3rd, 2024 through Columbus, Ohio’s Punkerton Records. This album represents their growth and deeper exploration of their musical identity, showcasing their ability to blend their varied influences into a cohesive and unique sound.
Of the new album Modern Angst’s lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Jared White says, “Part X is our response to that inner dialogue telling you “You’re not good enough”, “you’ll never amount to this or that”. It’s also a broader response to the societal pressures to meet the unrealistic expectation of perfection. While this isn’t necessarily a concept album, the underlying tone throughout is personal growth and empowerment through the daily struggles of the human condition.”
