Mean Jeans' top 5 songs about movies

Mean Jeans—Billy Jeans, Houndy and Junior Jeans—recently released their sixth album, ‘Blasted,’ out now on Fat Wreck Chords. And like they say themselves, “Every song can’t just be about partying or crying, so sometimes you have to write about great films.” So we asked the band to give us their top 5 Mean Jeans songs about movies. They obliged.

Something's Going On (off Blasted)

Mean Jeans: Class of Nuke Em High (1986) is a severely stupid, near-perfect film that was begging to have a mean jeans song about it.  We finally got around to it on our new record Blasted. The song and film are for fans of toxic waste, toxic weed, cretinism and destruction of high schools.

Reggie (Blasted)

Mean Jeans: Drummer/singer Houndy wrote this one, so my analysis can only go so deep, but it’s an homage to Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985). Reggie “The Reckless” is a rascal kid in a red sweatsuit who comes out of nowhere on a tractor, and his righteous brother Demon improvises some R&B while taking a shit. He dies in a port-a-potty. What’s not to love?

Night of the Creeps (off Are You Serious?)

Mean Jeans: This is another Houndy original from our first album, but the movie and song are both dear to my heart. For fans of alien slugs and killer zombies. How Houndy was able to write lyrics that plainly describe the film but also pull my heart strings speaks only to his mysterious genius.

Croozin (Tight New Dimension)

Mean Jeans: Everybody knows that 1992’s The Mighty Ducks is rated PG, but as fans of Emilio Estevez’s character Gordon Bombay (who is court ordered to coach a kids hockey team as community service for getting a DUI), we took a deeper look into the story. Croozin imagines what that last night of partying with the hot-headed Gordon was like.

Took Too Much (off Blasted)

Mean Jeans: This one is less about a movie and more a tribute to insatiability, with a verse through the eyes of Mike Schank of American Movie (1999). One of the greatest characters of all time and it’s a documentary! He famously retells a PCP overdose story where upon waking up in the hospital and seeing his mom flush his LSD down the toilet, his first memory is the disappointment that he couldn’t take 3 more hits in the hospital bed. Never enough for this guy! Mike died in 2022 sadly, so we had to pay tribute.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
