Here’s another found footage horror flick about a couple of college kids who set out to investigate a haunted house in Louisiana where a generation earlier bodies were piling up. Equipped with a ton of night vision cameras and recording devices, they want to record the supposed paranormal activity. Spoiler alert: they get more than they bargained for.
So far this sounds pretty formulaic, right? Well, the thing that is somewhat original in Will Canon’s “Demonic” is that the story is told via flashbacks. We find out the fate of most of the kids right at the beginning of the movie and then go back from there as police detective Mark Lewis (Frank Grillo) and psychologist Elizabeth Klein (Maria Bello) try to figure out what happened by interrogating the lone survivor (played by Dustin Mulligan) while at the same time going through the footage found at the house.
“Demonic” is not bad, save for the cheesy dialogue and scares that rely a bit too heavily on sudden loud noises. The final twist makes up for some of its flaws though, even if you see it coming from way down the road. Not great, but it could have been a lot worse.
