Movie Reviews
Is it just me or is it completely ridiculous to make a sequel for a movie called “The Last Exorcism”? I guess the studio thought so too because they came up with the subtitle ‘god asks the devil commands’ rather than go with “The Last Exorcism II”.
The first chapter was a decent horror flick about a disillusioned priest who hires a camera crew to document an exorcism somewhere in the boondocks in order to prove once and for all that possession is fake. It nicely combined the found footage genre with The Exorcist and came with plenty of scares. And like with every movie that enjoys a bit of success these days, a sequel was quickly in the making.
Director Ed Gass-Donnelly might have made a good impression with Small Town Murder songs, he completely misses the ball with this one. We get to follow Nell (Ashley Bell), who survived the first film, as she finds a new home in a house for troubled teens, gets a job in a hotel and even meets a nice guy. It seems everything is going just fine. Well, except for the loud music cues and Nell’s dead father appearing, two things that tell us everything is far from fine. Of course this all builds up to the exorcism the title refers to but by then I couldn’t really care anymore.
This has to be one of the most uneventful horror movies I’ve seen in quite some time and I’m hoping this really was the last exorcism in this franchise.
