Album Reviews
Bottom Bracket’s new album, ‘I’m So Afraid of Where,’ out now on Count Your Lucky Stars, finds the Chicago-based band drawing influences from the likes Braid, Into It. Over It., The Hotelier, Jimmy Eat World and Algernon Cadwallader alike. But rather than sounding like a copy of a copy, Bottom Bracket delivers a fresh perspective on a tried-and-true sound.
Mathy guitar licks, gang vocals, an energetic rhythm section and introspective lyricism. It’s all there in these ten songs. Opening track ‘A Condemnation’ finds vocalist Tim Recio wondering “Where do we all end up after this?”. Well, in a good place. There’s simply no going wrong with standout songs like ‘Great Lake Jumper,’ which bursts with intricate guitar hooks and rousing group chants, while ‘Spin Cycle’ mixes video game-like melodies with the kind of self-deprecating lyrics Midwest punk bands are known for.
Bottom Bracket’s members not only have a firm grasp on writing highly engaging songs, they have a great time playing them as well. Their enthusiasm shines through in every single song, delivering ample proof that emo is still thriving.
