Dust and Ashes, the new EP from Day by Day, came out on the 17th of January. According to Flatspot Records, the album was recorded live in the studio to make sure the record is raw and personal.
The entire six-track album is a total of 12 minutes and roughly 13 seconds long, all big heavy riffs, breakneck pacing, lightning quick blast beats, high-pitched squeals, deep growls, and the familiar DIY hardcore feel that Day By Day is known for. The big single off Dust and Ashes is “Until Then…It’s War” featuring Dalton Rivas of Three Knee Deep, coming in at just over two and a half minutes of kick-ass.
The record accomplishes what the band wants: no frills, fast, aggressive, straight-from-the-heart hardcore. With the exception of some cool almost dissonant riffing in “Still Bleeds” that reminded me a bit of Refused, the record has a traditional hardcore sound that works! Once again I say unto you: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. My one gripe with the album is one that’s actually a good problem to have for the band: I want more!
