Album Reviews

A couple of weeks ago, a friend of mine sent me the link to a video by a new-ish band that impressed the hell out of me. That band was Goodbye Blue Monday and the song was ‘Misery-Punk Ruined My Life,’ the title track off of the band’s new 3-song EP.
It kinda sucks for them that these Glasgow natives apparently only manage to write songs about feeling miserable. But honestly? I don’t really care that much. Not if it means they will keep treating us to anthems like this. Imagine Off With Their Heads, The Menzingers and The Flatliners all hanging out together… Yeah, it’s that good.
With a thick Scottish brogue poured over it to make things even better.
‘Worst In The Mornings’ is another banger, making off like a poppier version of Iron Chic, before they round things out with the singalong-y ‘Love Is A Noose For Two,’ which made me think of Banner Pilot.
I don’t know how they did it, but Goodbye Blue Monday managed to write three absolutely awesome songs that burst with memorable hooks and melodies while incorporating influences from all of my favorite bands. All this without ending up sounding like some copycat. Probably one of my favorite discoveries of the year.
