Album Reviews
Even though the uglyass artwork wants you to believe otherwise, this album is actually quite good. The winners of Humo’s Rock Rally 2006 (I can just see all you Americans now nodding like ‘oh yeah, THOSE guys!’) have finally unleashed their debut full-length upon the unsuspecting masses and let me tell you that you might want to cover the ears of your lil ones if you want them to still be able to distinguish anything above 8 kHz beyond the age of 12.
This album is loud as fuck with guitars that squeal and make all kinds of weird noises, a vocalist that still seems to think he can always buy new vocal chords when he has permanently fucked up his current ones and a drummer that is beating the living shit out of his drums Chris Brown-style.
Just like over at casa Brown, there are no traces of Rihanna to be found anywhere on this album (even though she might very well have co-written the track “Sick Of Boys”). Instead we are treated to just under a dozen slabs of raw, infected noise that combine the very best of Fugazi, Pixies and Queens Of The Stone Age. You may have already heard “Future Words” and “Mystery Bruise” (the two singles) but none of the other songs here are any less. Just check out “Blonde Fire” and try to disagree with me.
It’s not an easy album to get into but once you spent some time with it and get to know it, it will spread its beautiful legs for you Rihanna-style.
