Album Reviews
Featuring members of Typecaste, Hangman, and Rain of Salvation, Koyo are the latest in a long line of melodic hardcore bands to have sprung from the fertile underground of Long Island. Blending the melodies of Taking Back Sunday with the tuneful grit of Silent Majority and adding a dollop of I Am The Avalanche, Koyo aren’t exactly hiding their influences, but manage to give things a twist all their own. I’d throw in Set Your Goals as an influence as well, but that didn’t work with the whole New Jersey line seeing as they were from San Francisco.
Over the course of eleven songs, Koyo deliver all the feels. They are aggressive and in-your-face while also coming off as melancholy and sensitive. Produced by Markson (Drug Church, Taking Meds, One Step Closer),‘Would You Miss It?’ comes at you no holds barred. Mixing the emo and melodic hardcore sounds of days gone by, Koyo has managed to create an album that is right up there with their influences’ best work.
