Album Reviews
Initially started as a side project between Looking For Alaska’s vocalist Josh Cannon and guitarist Calvin Lauber, Pillow Talk have since grown into a full-fledged band. These Memphis dudes are now back with a new five-song EP called “What We Should Have Said” and on it they sound more ethereal than before with guitars that swirl all over the place and dreamy vocals.
Lauber explained they wanted to delve more into ‘lush soundscapes, modulated ambient guitar sounds and catchy vocal melodies’ and that the band ‘found influences in 80ies band like The Cure, The Smiths and My Bloody Valentine’ I’m not really hearing a lot of those influences but I agree with the soundscapes part and the ambient guitar sounds. If you like that last Seahaven album, you might want to give Pillow Talk a listen as well because they are pretty adept at taking the listener on a journey. The only problem I have with these songs is that they kind of float on without ever really arriving anywhere. I do think Pillow Talk are onto something but they should take some more time to cultivate those ideas.
