Based on the fact that Sharks played with Gallows and Fucked Up, you might be led to believe they belong in the punk/hardcore scene. But then you start listening to “Selfhood” and hear a mod-influenced rock album with a vocalist who channels a little less Joe Strummer this time around and more Morrissey.

All of the songs on here are easy enough on the ears and would fit perfectly on the radio. Yet somehow they never make much of a lasting impression. I couldn’t tell you exactly why that is though. I mean the rhythm section is tight as can be, the guitar leads are melodic and the vocals are pleasant… in other words, there’s nothing wrong with the songs and “Selfhood” is a fun album that plays well in the background. Problem is that you’re never really drawn into the material, which makes it a little too carefree to be a standout.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
