Started by members of Joyride, Watercolor Paintings, Void Boys and Dreamspoiler, the Bay Area’s Soar dish out ten grunge-y tracks on “Dark/Gold” that are as unassuming as they are stunning.

There’s just something about how the rhythm section that constantly seems to hold back, the gently buzzing guitars and the harmonized group vocals, all click together in the best of ways. But at the same time, songs still end up sounding like they were haphazardly slapped together, lending “Dark/Gold” this off-the-cuff unpredictability that is entirely endearing.

Towards the end, things do start to sound a bit repetitive. But regardless, any band that can write songs like “Secret Santa” or the absolutely delightful “Speakwrite”, gets a pass in my book.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
