After meeting in The Chris Gethard Show’s house band, vocalist/bassist Hallie Bulleit and vocalist/guitarist Alex Chute decided to start a band. A drummer was quickly brought into the fold in the form of Piyal Basu… et voila, Hiccup was born. And with “Imaginary Enemies”, they have now released their debut album.
Don’t let the cover scare you. The songs themselves don’t sound like the bad trip the album seems to have resulted from. Instead you are treated to a dozen power-pop-punk songs that tap from the same vein as the Ramones, The Mr. T Experience, the Muffs, the Smoking Popes and a zillion other bands. In other words, Hiccup aren’t exactly doing anything new on “Imaginary Enemies”.
But these songs are so full of buzzing guitars, catchy hooks and the kind of vocal harmonies that sound like they were plucked from a Belle & Sebastian album, that they are kinda hard to resist. Check out single “Lady MacBeth and Miss Havisham” below.
