The Methadones are returning to Chicago after five years to play Chop Shop (2033 W North Ave, Chicago, IL 60647) with Direct Hit!, Dan Vapid and The Cheats, and Capgun Heroes on Saturday, June 27th. Tickets will go on sale this Friday at 10am.

The Methadones formed in 1993 by guitarist/vocalist Dan Schafer, AKA, Dan Vapid. The band lasted a few shows before Dan put the side project on the backburner to focus on his main band, Screeching Weasel. In 1994, Screeching Weasel disbanded and Dan Schafer and former bandmate, Ben Foster, traded off lead vocal duties with their new project, The Riverdales. It seemed that The Methadones would never come to fruition. By 1999, Schafer was no longer a member of Screeching Weasel or The Riverdales, and became determined to restart The Methadones with B-Face of The Queers on bass, and Dan Lumley on drums. The band recorded their first album, Ill at Ease, in 2001. After the recording, B-Face and Lumley left the band and Schafer formed a new lineup of The Methadones with guitarist Mike Byrne, bassist Pete Mittler, and drummer Mike Soucy.

In 2003, the band would begin their most prolific period, releasing four albums in five years. Career Objective came first via Thick Records, followed by Not Economically Viable, also on Thick, in 2004. In 2006, the band moved to Red Scare and released 21st Century Power Pop Riot. The next year they issued This Won’t Hurt…, also via Red Scare.

They released a split album with The Copyrights in 2008, but by the summer of 2010, The Methadones announced that they were breaking up. Later that year they would release a self-titled compilation album on Asian Man Records, which featured five new songs.

Since then, The Methadones have played only two shows, (one in 2011 and another in 2015). Now they’re back for the first time in nearly five years and have announced four upcoming shows. The first is on May 29th at Red Flag in St. Louis, MO. After that, they’ll play Chop Shop in Chicago on June 27th. Then the band heads to Italy for Punk Rock Raduno and Germany for Back To Future Festival, both of which take place in July.
