We are excited to premiere the video for Kanashii's new single, 'Ego Death,' taken off the band's upcoming EP. Formed during the 2020 pandemic by lead singer/guitarist, Sammy Clifford, as a way to convey empathy, grief, and many other emotions via musical expression, Kanashii is a modern grunge/shoegaze band out of Kentucky. Joined by Smitty on bass, Eric Dutton on drums, and David Johnson on guitar the band has built a unique sound inspired by bands such as Nirvana, Deftones, My Bloody Valentine, and The Cure while 'Ego Death' finds them channeling their inner Alice In Chains. The word, Kanashi, translates to sad, miserable, unhappy, or sorrowful person in Japanese. The band decided to use this name since the original creation of the band was to be an outlet to help cope with negative emotions.

“The song “Ego Death” is about this long search I’ve been on since I was 15 it’s about finding yourself by dissolving your Ego or (killing your ego);" explains Sammy Clifford. "It’s about wanting to change every part of yourself because you’re unhappy with the cards you’ve been dealt in life. The songs about me wanting to change the things that I cannot change about myself. Whether that’s  through spirituality or psychedelic medicine whatever it takes.”

“The video was inspired a lot by Nirvana/Foo Fighters," Clifford continues. "We wanted this psychedelic aspect since the song is about that kind of stuff. But we wanted that classic Scooby Doo chase scene vibe and us wearing wigs as a symbolism of us being someone else rather than ourselves our own sort of visual ego death that the listener could see.  The video was loads of fun to shoot our friend Hunter from Timeless Moments Visuals did a great job.”

Kanashii's self-titled EP will be out July 9 on Cardigan Records. You can pre-order it here.
