In Finland, young kids are sent out in the wilderness on their thirteenth birthday where they have to kill a bear or some other big animal in order to become a man. It’s a rite of passage kinda thing. This also goes for Oskari (Onni Tommila), the son of the biggest, baddest hunter around. However, things take a turn for the unexpected when Air Force One crashes in the forest with president William Alan Moore (Samuel L. Jackson) on board. Can Oskari and Moore survive in the rugged wilderness while being hunted by a bunch of baddies who want to kill the president and mount him on a wall? Yeah, you read that last part right.
Without a doubt, “Big Game” is the most ridiculously outrageous action adventure of the year and it reminded me of a cross between Air Force One and The Goonies. In a good way. Not for one second does “Big Game” take itself seriously. Writer-director Jalmari Helander proves to be just the guy for the job, previously having turned Santa in a homicidal maniac in “Rare Export : A Christmas Tale”, and he gets to go all out here while being able to count on an excellent supporting cast that includes Ray Stevenson, Felicity Huffman, Ted Levine and Jim Broadbent. Throw in some solid action sequences and a couple of laughs, and you’re looking at a very entertaining movie.
