Album Reviews
Some of you might know Lily Mastrodimos from the band Jawbreaker Reunion. I don’t. Cool band name though. While still in that band, she started writing songs under the Long Neck moniker. Which was a solo project until it stopped being one and became a full-fledged rock band instead.
What remained though, are Mastrodimos’ personal songs. In the case of ‘Will This Do?,’ the songs are her way of dealing with a particularly bad year in which she was working a shitty job while also having to come to terms with the loss of three grandparents in less than six months.
Most of the songs on here are of the indie rock meets pop punk inclination with full-on energy blasts like opener ‘Mine/Yours’ or ‘Lichens’. But you get treated just as well to ‘Elizabeth,’ which seems full of nostalgic longing, or fragile acoustics like ‘Rosy’ and ’10,000 Year Old Woman’. And somewhere in between is the moody, sullen ‘Ashes,’ which sounds like the musical equivalent of a grumpy old man yelling at kids to get off of his lawn.
There’s quite a lot of variation going on here, but Mastrodimos has no problem tying everything together in a cohesive collection of solid songs. And here’s to hoping she has a better yet equally inspiring 2018!
