Album Reviews
- by Tom Dumarey
The indie punk darlings known as Martha are back with a fresh new batch of songs that serves as a follow-up to 2016’s already excellent ‘Blisters In The Pit Of My Heart’. And well… ‘Love Keeps Kicking’ is even excellent-er.
The eleven songs that make up ‘Love Keeps Kicking’ are so jam-packed with vocal melodies, shiny pop hooks and catchy as hell guitar licks, that it borders ridiculous. And as if that isn’t enough yet, they sweeten things even more by throwing in plenty of ooh’s and aah’s along with the kind of choruses that are forever etched in your brain after hearing them only once. The fact that they stuck with their seemingly ramshackle sound only adds to the charm. I mean, check out single and opener ‘Heart Is Healing’ or the title track… how can you not fall in love with these songs?
Judging from how upbeat and smile-inducing these songs are, you’d never guess that a lot of them deal with heartbreak. These aren’t bummer songs though and Martha takes it all in stride. Sure, life can suck sometimes. But as long as we have bands like Martha making albums like ‘Love Keeps Kicking,’ then we still have more than enough to get us through the day.
