Album Reviews
Armed with traditional folk and pop sensibilities, Johnny Flynn does a decent job on his third album of writing songs that don’t drag on or wear out their welcome. The Calexico-ish “The Lady Is Risen” is definitely a fun song and the same can be said for “Fol-De-Rol”. “Einstein’s Idea” on the other hand sounds a bit like a Bon Iver leftover and Flynn seems to have had The Pogues on his mind on a couple of other songs. Doesn’t sound too bad, does it?
That’s why it’s a shame that Flynn never really succeeds in capturing my attention. For some reason, none of the songs left much of an impression on me other than the two more upbeat ones (the abovementioned “The Lady Is Risen” and “Fol-De-Rol”) and it’s a damn shame there aren’t more of those to be found on “Country Mile”… it would’ve been quite an improvement over songs called “Tinker’s Trail”.
