Supergenius. Isn’t that a Quicksand song? Why yes, it is. It is however also the name of a new Belgian band featuring members of Rise & Fall, Blind To Faith, Wiegedood and The Rott Childs among others who seem to have spent quite some time listening to Quicksand and other 90s luminaries.
After just a handful of rehearsals, Supergenius already headed for the studio to record four jams that make up their self-titled debut. Talk about being determined! Listening to opening track “Making Shapes”, you’d never guess they’ve only been a band for a year. The song builds up nicely before gruff, Hot Water Music-ish vocals kick in and lead you to the kind of chorus that you can’t help nodding along to.
“The Transmitter” is up next and comes with a riff you wouldn’t label as catchy at first, but which somehow manages to remain firmly lodged in your head after just one listen. For those of you who felt there aren’t enough good songs about brainstems, Supergenius are here to remedy the situation with “Goodbye Brainstem” and then round out the EP with the slightly mellower “Rumours”.
Fueled by hardcore intensity, Supergenius sound passionate and melodic in equal measures. They tap from the same vein as a lot of the better indie/post-hardcore bands from the 90s and manage to channel those influences into four songs that make you want to hear more. So how about it guys? Couple more rehearsals and then a full-length?
